Monster Trove: Old Fears and Hungry Things

Apep

Gargantuan

About

Apep is the immense serpent of unmaking that attacks the passage of the sun and the continuance of ordered existence. Its body is darkness with scales, long enough to coil through a divine horizon rather than an ordinary desert. Apep hungers for interruption, silence, and the moment when tomorrow fails to arrive. Mortal weapons matter only when joined to ritual resistance already occurring across the Divine Realms.

Special Attack

Swallow the Horizon: creatures in a 90 ft cone make a Quick save. A failure deals 6d10 necrotic damage and extinguishes every nondivine light carried by the creature. A successful save avoids the damage and leaves those lights burning. Night-Coil: one creature within 60 ft makes a Mind save. On a failure it is held inside a loop of lightless space and takes 3d10 damage at the start of its next turn; a spoken sunrise rite releases it. A successful save prevents the coil.

Special Defense

Ritual of Continuance: each round in which three creatures speak, sing, or enact a rite affirming sunrise removes 1 DR from Apep. At DR 0, radiant damage is doubled against it.
