Monster Trove: Old Fears and Hungry Things

Ape

Large

About

An ape is dangerous because it combines reach, strength and a clear understanding of threat. It warns intruders with broken branches, ground slaps and charges that stop just short. If those warnings fail, it strikes with both hands, drags enemies away from young or food and uses roots, rocks and trunks as naturally as another creature uses walls.

Special Attack

Hammering Charge: bludgeoning, melee 5 ft, +3 to hit, 2d6+2. A target of Medium size or smaller makes a Tough save; on a failed save, it is driven 10 ft backward and knocked down.

Special Defense

Submission Signal: before blood is drawn, lowering weapons, avoiding a direct stare and backing away slowly prevents an attack unless the ape is trapped or defending young. An ape among trees gains +2 Quick against attacks from farther than 20 ft.
