On a crowded beach or narrow ice ledge, a walrus becomes a wall of muscle, blubber and ivory. Adults rest shoulder to shoulder, and a startled group may crush anything caught between bodies and water. A bull defending space swings its tusks upward, then simply leans its weight into whatever remains standing.
