Monster Trove: Things Others Swore They Saw

Hell Hound

Large

About

A black dog the size of a calf on the old lane between the village and the church, with eyes that hold a lamp badly. Seeing it once is unremarkable and everyone has. Seeing it twice is talked about. Seeing it a third time is the end of the account, because there is nobody left to give one. It is not in a hurry about this and it will take as long as it needs.

Special Attack

Bite: piercing, melee 5 ft, +4 to hit, 2d8+3. The Third Sighting: no attack roll and no save. A creature that has seen this hound on three separate occasions is marked, and the DN should have decided the first two long before the party met it. The mark is a date. On that date the hound comes for that creature specifically, at night, wherever they are and through whatever is in the way, and it does not leave until one of them is dead. The DN should set the date far enough out that the party has time to do something about it, and should tell them what it is.

Special Defense

Of the Old Ways: it keeps to lanes, churchyards, crossroads and boundary stones, and cannot be met anywhere else - on any night but one. The Collection: on the marked date all of that is suspended. It goes wherever the marked creature is, crosses parish boundaries, running water and thresholds without difficulty, and comes through whatever has been put in the way. This is the only night it can do any of that, and it is the only night it needs to. Unhurried: on every other night it does not press an attack, does not pursue past the parish boundary, and withdraws at the first serious injury. Killing it is possible and does not remove a mark already given.
