Monster Trove: Things Others Swore They Saw

Mandragora

Small

About

It is a root, and it is shaped like a person, and it is worth more than most people will earn in a year. The difficulty is entirely in the harvest. Pulled from the ground it screams, and the scream is not a sound that ears are built to survive. The old method is documented and nobody enjoys it: stop your own ears, tie a dog to the plant, and call the dog.

Magic Resistance: Silence cast on the plant before it is pulled suppresses the scream entirely. This is the modern method and the reason fewer dogs die now.

Special Attack

The Scream: triggered automatically the instant it leaves the soil, not on its turn and not by its choice. 30 ft, save Con Tough, fail save roll 2d6 psychic - which DR does not reduce - and the target is deafened for 1d6 hours. A creature whose ears are stopped in advance is unaffected.

Special Defense

Rooted: while in the ground it has no attacks and does not act. It is a plant. It is only ever a hazard, never an opponent, and this is the point of it. Uprooted: out of the soil it flails weakly for 1d4 rounds and then dies, and is then worth a great deal to the right buyer.
