A Noppera-bo first appears as an ordinary traveler, innkeeper, friend, or frightened stranger. Only when trust or concern draws someone close does every feature vanish, leaving a smooth blank face. It feeds on shock instead of flesh and often repeats the trick through several borrowed identities, making the victim doubt whether any familiar face is real.
