An Abura-sumashi is a squat, stone-faced spirit seen on lonely mountain passes where oil was once stolen from roadside shrines. Its round head rises above a straw cloak, and its silence feels more like judgment than shyness. It blocks travelers carrying stolen goods, follows those who lie about them, and steps aside for anyone who makes honest restitution.
