Cougar

A cougar follows from above the trail or just beyond the edge of firelight. It chooses a separated traveler, closes in a few silent bounds and tries to put weight across the shoulders before biting. Unlike a pack hunter, it has no companions to lend courage; a failed attack often sends it back into cover unless hunger or a nearby den keeps it committed.

Shoulder Pounce: slashing, melee 5 ft, +4 to hit, 1d10+2. If the cougar began its turn unseen and moved at least 10 ft, the target makes a Quick save; on a failed save, it is knocked down and suffers -2 to its next attack.

Solitary Caution: after a missed Shoulder Pounce or after taking 8 damage in one round, the cougar makes a Mind save. On a failed save, it retreats to cover and does not attack again unless cornered, starving or defending young.
