    Twelve feet of red waxed cord strung with eight bone slips, every slip rubbed smooth on one face and rough on the other.

    Effect

    Any creature that holds a slip for one minute is counted to the cord. Whoever holds the cord then knows at all times whether each counted creature is alive, whether it is awake, and its direction and distance out to five miles, through stone and water. Cutting a slip free ends that count for good and it cannot be recounted.
