Sounding Whistle

Short bone whistle with a plugged end and a bored channel, dull to look at and cold on the lip.

Blown into a shaft, drain, pipe, or dark space, the whistle returns a note that tells the holder its depth, its shape, and whether anything alive is down there. Blown in open air it sounds a note that carries a mile through stone and cannot be heard by anyone standing beside the holder.
