Save Roll, Chance Roll (check roll), Probability Roll?
3 types of rolls, DN determines the TN (Target Number) or % percentage chance of success or failure.
1. Save Roll - reacting to danger
- Used when something is coming at you or happening to you.
- Beat the TN (Target Number 1 - 20) to avoid or reduced harm.
- You roll 1d20 + the relevant ability bonus (DEX Quick, CON Tough, WIS Mind).
Examples:
- Dodging a falling boulder
- Resisting poison
- Withstanding a magical charm
Theme: danger strikes, you react.
2. Chance Roll - you are actively attempting something
- Used when you choose to act and the outcome depends on your skill or effort.
- Roll 1d20 + an applicable ability bonus.
- Beat the TN to succeed.
Examples:
- Jumping over a pit
- Climbing a crumbling wall
- Trying to recall lore
Theme: you take action and see if it works.
3. Probability Roll - outcome is out of your control
- Used when no one's skill is involved and the event is purely random.
- Roll percentile dice.
- If the result is within the stated percentage, the event happens.
Examples:
- A map fall in fire, being too burnt to read (% percent chance)
- Holding a vial and you fall and it might break (% percent chance)
Theme: fate decides, not the character.
